Zelenskyy, King Abdullah II Discuss Security Cooperation

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Sunday in Amman to discuss a potential partnership in the security sector and the broader situation in the Middle East.

Zelenskyy highlighted Kyiv’s readiness for joint efforts to defend against drone and missile attacks. “From our own experience, we know that without a unified system, it is simply impossible to establish comprehensive protection of people and critical infrastructure,” he said on X. “We have such a system, because for the fifth year of Russia’s full-scale war, we have been forced to defend ourselves against constant Russian strikes, including those carried out using Iranian drones,” he added.

He emphasized the importance of ensuring that Ukraine’s expertise strengthens both Kyiv and its partners. Zelenskyy noted that since the outbreak of the US-Israel conflict with Iran, several regional countries have sought Ukraine’s assistance in countering Iranian drones.

The conflict began on February 28 when Israel and the US launched an offensive against Iran, reportedly causing over 1,340 casualties, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting US forces, resulting in human casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.

Zelenskyy recently completed a tour of three Gulf countries—Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. In Qatar, Ukraine signed a long-term defense agreement, while discussions in the UAE focused on defense cooperation with President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. In Saudi Arabia, he met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah, with both sides signing a defense cooperation agreement on Friday.
