Democrats Urge Federal Probe Into Noem’s Congressional Testimony
In correspondence addressed to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Senator Dick Durbin and Representative Jamie Raskin pointed to several occasions where Noem is accused of presenting false or misleading information while testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 3 and the House Judiciary Committee on March 4, according to reports.
"After months of evading our Committees’ requests to testify in routine oversight hearings, Secretary Noem made a series of demonstrably false statements in a brazen attempt to undermine critical congressional oversight of the Department of Homeland Security," they wrote.
The lawmakers’ referral focuses in part on Noem’s repeated assertions that the Department of Homeland Security and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had adhered to federal court rulings, despite evidence indicating violations of those orders.
The letter further emphasizes that providing false testimony to Congress or under oath is considered a federal offense under US law, specifically citing statutes related to false statements and perjury.
"While we have low expectations that you will pursue this matter given your partisan weaponization of the Department of Justice, we note that the statute of limitations for perjury and for knowingly and willfully making false statements to Congress is five years," they said.
