Spain urges strong security guarantees for Ukraine to protect Europe

(MENAFN) Spain’s Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares warned that Europe’s security framework is at risk, emphasizing that Ukraine must receive “solid security guarantees.”

Speaking after a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha, Albares expressed hope that 2026 will bring peace for the Ukrainian people. “I have reiterated my condemnation of the recent attacks against civilian infrastructure in Kyiv and other cities. It is unacceptable that Ukrainians have to live Christmas under the bombs,” he wrote on social media.

The minister reaffirmed Spain’s support for negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. “Europe must remain united and firm because the future European security framework is at stake,” he said. He added, “Ukraine must have solid security guarantees. Any decision about its future, especially regarding its territories, can only be made by the Ukrainian people.”

Albares’ comments follow recent Russian attacks that reportedly killed three people and disrupted power in several Ukrainian regions. They also came after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida, where post-war reconstruction and Russian support, including energy supply at low prices, were discussed.
