Xi Confirms Commitment to Strengthening Ties with Russia
Xi conveyed this message while exchanging New Year greetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a state-run news agency.
He emphasized that 2025 “marks a concrete step in the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era,” highlighting the deepening cooperation between the two nations.
His comments followed remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who reiterated Moscow’s opposition to “any form of independence” for Taiwan.
Speaking to a Russian state outlet on Sunday, Lavrov stressed that his country’s stance on Taiwan is “well-known, unchangeable, and has been repeatedly reaffirmed at the highest level.” He added, “Russia recognizes Taiwan as an integral part of China and opposes any form of independence for the island.”
Lavrov further noted, “We proceed from the premise that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter for the PRC (People’s Republic of China). Beijing has every legitimate basis for defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
These statements come against the backdrop of escalating tensions between China and Japan. Since November 7, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has warned that a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan could legally be considered a “survival-threatening situation,” which might allow Japan to invoke its right to collective self-defense.
