Hunger Crisis: Malnutrition Claims at Least 46 Lives in Sudan
Medical teams “monitored 46 deaths in South Kordofan due to malnutrition during July and August, most of them women and children,” the group stated.
The organization warned of critical nutritional gaps, noting that “more than 19,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women are in urgent need of supplementary nutrition.”
In a strongly worded statement, the network condemned what it described as the weaponization of food shortages. Calling it “a crime against humanity and a war crime under international law,” the group decried the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the cities of Kadugli and Dalanj.
Blaming the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for encircling civilian areas, the network denounced “the continued siege and starvation of civilians” and demanded “the immediate lifting of the blockade and the opening of safe humanitarian corridors to allow unrestricted delivery of food and medicine.”
The network also issued an urgent plea to “local, regional, and international authorities, the World Health Organization, and all relevant humanitarian agencies to intervene immediately to save the lives of pregnant and breastfeeding women and children before it is too late.”
Fighting between Sudan’s military and the RSF has escalated in recent months across the Kordofan region, compounding an already catastrophic war.
Since conflict erupted in April 2023, over 20,000 people have been killed and more than 14 million displaced, according to the United Nations and local sources. However, independent estimates by U.S. academic institutions suggest the death toll could be as high as 130,000.
