UN Specialists Decry US Sanctions on ICC
(MENAFN) UN specialists on Friday labeled the United States’ fresh punitive actions against personnel of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as "alarming," cautioning that these steps represent a blatant attack on the tribunal’s autonomy and undermine worldwide initiatives to enforce accountability for heinous crimes.
"It is alarming to see a country show such continuing hostility towards the legal and peaceful actions of an independent tribunal set up by the international community," the experts declared in a formal statement.
The newest round of restrictions, made public on Wednesday by the US, targets two judges and two deputy prosecutors from the ICC. These measures come after comparable actions in June that affected four other judges, as well as the court’s lead prosecutor earlier in the year.
"Sanctioning ICC judges and prosecutors sabotages the fight against impunity and tells the world that power, not justice, rules in the face of atrocity," the experts cautioned.
They appealed to the US to revoke the sanctions and called on the EU to activate its "blocking statute" to defend ICC personnel against illegal retaliation.
