Libya Prevents Missile Strike Near UN Headquarters
“An attempt to target the headquarters of the UN mission with an SPG (self-propelled gun) missile was thwarted,” the ministry's declaration stated.
A residential building in the Janzour neighborhood was hit, though officials reported no structural harm.
Law enforcement confiscated a Toyota Camry that contained two more missiles and the launcher believed to have been used in the incident. An inquiry has been initiated to uncover those responsible.
The ministry pledged “no tolerance for criminals and outlaws,” reaffirming its dedication to protecting foreign embassies and diplomatic missions.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) verified via the U.S.-based platform X that a missile had been fired in the vicinity of its facility while UN Special Representative Hanna Tetteh was briefing the Security Council. No harm was caused, it confirmed.
Tetteh, during her presentation, introduced a plan intended to establish a single, unified leadership in Libya, following the conclusion of local elections, which are considered pivotal for enhancing grassroots governance and ending the nation’s long-standing transitional phase.
Libya continues to be split between two opposing governments: the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity, headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and overseeing the western regions, and a separate authority formed by the House of Representatives in 2022, led by Osama Hammad, operating from Benghazi and managing the eastern and much of the southern areas.
